Ganymedes with the Eagle

A roman copy of the Greek original, the sculpture of Ganymede and the Eagle dating back to the 2nd Century is displayed at The State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg (Russia).

Zeus struck by his beauty, guised as an eagle to abducts Ganyemede, the beautiful divine hero, to serve as cup-bearer in Olympus. Ganymede was seen as a symbol of homosexual love since the Renaissance.

Ganymede and the Eagle has served as subject for historical artists such as Bertel Thorvaldsen and Jose Alvarez Cubero.
