The USS North Carolina (BB-55) was the lead ship of the U.S. Navy’s North Carolina-class battleships and one of the most celebrated American warships of World War II. Commissioned in 1941, she was the first new battleship to join the U.S. fleet in two decades.Armed with nine 16-inch guns and twenty 5-inch anti-aircraft guns, the ship served primarily in the Pacific Theater, providing crucial support during major campaigns like Guadalcanal, the Marshall Islands, and the Philippines. Known for her speed, firepower, and resilience, she earned 15 battle stars—more than any other U.S. battleship in the war.Decommissioned in 1947, the USS North Carolina is now a museum ship in Wilmington, North Carolina, where she serves as a memorial to all North Carolinians who served in World War II.
